Imagine you are in a castle at night. Your path ahead is shown only by the yellow glow of candlelight. Overhead bats gorge on the insects of the night and somewhere nearby an owl emits a mournful cry. You are joined by a companion. You start up a conversation, but he remains silent. As the clouds part a shaft of moonlight catches your companion and you see the bloodied sword in his hand and the severed head…..
Fact or fiction? Now you have a chance to find out for yourself. The Ghost Walks of Pontefract Castle take you back in time to meet the ghosts of the low and the mighty who have resided and died within its walls. You will meet with kings and queens. You will meet with knaves and vagabonds. You will experience life as a Civil War prisoner. Some of you may even be lucky enough to escape alive!. We recommend that you wear warm clothing and stout shoes with a good tread.
We provide two offerings on each of our evenings:
· A family performance starting at 19:00 – where the emphasis is more to entertain than to terrify
· An adult performance starting at 20:30 – reflecting the bawdy humour of the time and describing some of the more gruesome pleasures
Admission by ticket only
Tickets are available from Wakefield Tourist Information Centre tel: 01924 305000
The castle was built for defence and not for entertainment. Whilst Pontefract Heritage Group is fully committed to providing equality of opportunity, we regret that not all areas of the castle are accessible to people with disabilities. To avoid disappointment, we encourage people to contact us before booking to discuss any particular issues or concerns.
